F 21 Aircraft - Lockheed Martin is developing a new variant of its iconic single-engine F-16 fighter jet to compete in India's 2019 tender for 110 new fighter jets.
India magazine had previously ordered 36 Rafales in a previous fighter aircraft tender. "With 36 aircraft already on order and the infrastructure for an additional 36, it is certain that the training, base and maintenance costs for the additional aircraft will not be an insurmountable burden."

"Given the government-approved strength of the Indian Air Force, the country's well-publicized security scenario, and the possibility of a 'two-front' threat from Pakistani and Chinese airstrikes to the west and north-east, 42 fighter squadrons," Singh wrote.
"However, it is little clear how this exact figure came about, as the IAF has not come close to this strength in two decades and has never come close to a fully modernized force."
As of 2019, the Indian Air Force only operates 30 fighter squadrons. The units operated like other aircraft types, with 244 MiG-21s from the 1960s and 84 MiG-27s only slightly smaller. Especially the MiG-21 aircraft are prone to accidents. Since the first of 874 MiG-21s entered service in India in 1963, some 490 have crashed and almost 200 pilots have been killed.

The bombing was followed by a dogfight lasting several days. On February 27, 2019, New Delhi claimed that Pakistani F-16s and other aircraft crossed the Line of Control and attacked Indian forces. According to the Indian government, Indian MiG-21s and other fighter jets intercepted the Pakistanis and shot down one plane.
The US government counted Pakistan's F-16s after the war and concluded that none were missing, casting doubt on New Delhi's claim.
Islamabad claimed its forces shot down two Indian MiG-21s, while New Delhi lost only one jet. The MiG-21 pilot, Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, was captured by Pakistani forces and held for two days before being handed over to Indian authorities.
Now New Delhi wants to spend around $18 billion to buy 110 new fighter jets to replace the old MiGs. The new aircraft will fly alongside European-designed Jaguars, French Mirage 2000s and Rafales, Russian MiG-29s and Su-30s and India's own indigenous Tejas fighters in what Lockheed calls "the world's largest fighter ecosystem".

For the purposes of Lockheed's marketing campaign, the F-21 was a new fighter aircraft, although it shared important features with the F-16V, which the company sold to Bahrain, Greece, Slovakia, South Korea and Taiwan. Lockheed can build new F-16Vs or upgrade older F-16s to V standard.
However, renaming the F-16V is not just semantics. The F-16V or F-21 is a completely different fighter than the F-16A, which first flew in 1978. The F-16V weighs 10 tons, has sophisticated radar and other sensors, and a wide range of long-range weapons, all at the expense of maneuverability.

The latest version of the F-16, officially known as the F-16 Black 70, is a thoroughly modern fighter.
