Hundreds of protesters gathered across the street from the Arizona State Fairgrounds, where President Trump held a rally Wednesday night. But most of the space set up by the police for people to air their complaints remained empty.

Most of the protesters arrived at the event an hour before Trump was scheduled to speak at the Coliseum.

Demonstrator Philip Rubianes believes there could be a repeat of 2017, when police and protesters clashed after Trump's rally yesterday. Instead, he says tight security has helped keep the situation calm.

"It felt very confined. Yes, they have this bar, this gate. There are police on the roof watching us all the time," Rubianes said.

Rubianes is a student who offers reasons to oppose the president. He plans to vote for Bernie Sanders in the presidential election for the first time this year.

More than 10,000 people gathered Wednesday night for a rally for President Trump at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Trump shared the stage with Republican politicians hoping to ride their tails to victory in the fall.

"It's great to be here in the great state of Arizona with thousands of hardworking patriots who believe in God, family and country."

President Trump addressed a crowd of supporters, many of whom had been waiting to see him all day.

"You know, Martha is tough on the border and she's working with me to strengthen our military and lower prescription drug prices, and we're making a lot of progress," Trump said.

"Democrats don't like him much either." He wants to raise your taxes, open your borders, give free healthcare to illegal immigrants, and he wants to repeal your second amendment. He wants to get rid of him.''

Trump called McSally a fighter and pledged his full and complete support for his campaign, saying he would return to Arizona several times before the November election.

We don't know the exact number of people inside because the Trump campaign didn't share the number they were expecting. We know that each state will have a maximum of 14,000 depending on the configuration of the showgrounds, which guided us to the campaign.

STEVE GOLDSTEIN: President Trump is holding a rally in Phoenix today, and his supporters are ready. People lined the Veterans Memorial Coliseum more than 24 hours before the president took the stage. And is Christina Estes there now? Christina, did you find a good place there?

ESTES: Well, they're very excited. Maybe our wonderful Arizona weather will help. I've seen a steady stream of people coming in for probably the last hour. I talked to a guy who drove from Tucson this morning. He said he watched the president's 2017 rally in Phoenix on TV at home and said, "I'll be there next time." So here it is. He said it was a historic opportunity to see the president.

BRODIE: So Christina, you had a chance to talk to some people this morning. What do they tell you?

ESTES: Well, they say they're all ready for Trump. It seems some of the things that irritate his opponents are the same things that many of his supporters like: He's outspoken, tough-talking. I spoke with Jill Millet. She came from San Diego with her daughter. He is 82 years old and says this is the first time he is involved in politics.
