Tempest Stealth Fighter - Ahead of the start of the Farnborough Air Show, executives from across the aviation industry gathered in high heat to announce a partnership with Japan on plans for the next-generation Tempest fighter jet.
The first supersonic Tempest will fly "within the next five years" to test features such as stealth capabilities.

The Tempest, designed to replace the long-running Typhoon fighter jet, is being developed by FTSE 100 manufacturer BAE Systems with Italy's Leonardo at a facility near Preston. Another FTSE 100 manufacturer, Rolls-Royce, is making engines for aircraft.

Japan is developing its own F-X fighter jet, but Monday's announcement halted full integration of the projects. Instead, Japan joined Britain and Italy to "understand areas of common interest and explore opportunities for cooperation in future combat aviation."
Although the British government has increased defense spending since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, gaining a new full partner in the Tempest program could help the new fighter by sharing much of the cost of engine development. Some experts estimate it could be as high as £25 billion.

Speaking at the show, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: "Future combat systems are not just planes. It is the perfect platform for technological change and upheaval in various industries.”

It was the first day of the show at Hampshire Airport, the return of the British heatwave two years after the last one was canceled due to coronavirus restrictions. Analysts expect manufacturers to receive hundreds of orders from Airbus and Boeing during the show.
Monday's first big order came from US carrier Delta Air Lines, which said it would buy 100 Boeing 737 Max passenger jets worth a total of $13.5bn (£11.3bn), a major boost for the US manufacturer. Formed worldwide following two previous fatal crashes of the 737 Max, the Tempest Team is made up of BAE Systems, Leonardo, Rolls-Royce, MBDA and the Royal Air Force (RAF) Office of Rapid Equipment, as well as several small and medium-sized businesses and universities.
The preliminary results of the Pwc report, which will be published in full later this year, say the R&D scheme will add £25.3 billion to the UK economy over the first 30 years and "support an average of 20,000 jobs". "Every year from 2026 to 2050."
The results also show that for every 100 people directly employed by the Tempest Team, another 270 people are employed across the UK.

"The first analysis presented today shows that the Tempest is vital to ensuring the UK maintains a world-leading fighter jet fleet and the sovereign capability necessary to protect the UK's military independence."
The program's financial benefits come with the release of technical details about Team Tempest's future fighter jet, which the team says is "the equivalent of 'City Data' in a second."
The Tempest was expected to enter service in the mid-1930s, replacing the Typhoon as a European fighter within the RAF. The aircraft is part of a broader combat air system that may include "wingless" unmanned aerial systems (UAS).

Team Tempest also shared some insights into the program today, including that Leonardo, the program's director of electronics, is working on a new radar system that could provide 10,000 times more data than existing systems.

The "Multiple Radio Frequency System" aims to collect data "equivalent to the network traffic of a major city like Edinburgh" every second.
The new sensor is described as offering a range of "features beyond conventional radar", and the company has already built a complete subsystem using the technology with airborne demonstration lines in the "next years".
Additionally, BAE Systems said it has begun flight testing components for the aircraft's "wearable cockpit" technology. The system is said to replace the aircraft's physical controls with "augmented and virtual reality displays projected directly onto the helmet," which can be configured to perform different tasks.

A team from MBDA is also working on the technology to ensure early development of the weapon concept. The MBDA team is also looking at how "instrument system and operational information" is optimized for pilots.
BAE Systems is also exploring the development of a "virtual co-pilot" that can take over and automate some of the pilot's responsibilities.
"Psychophysiological" techniques are also being tested to measure the pilot's physical and cognitive processes. BAE Systems says this will help to better understand "exertion, stress, workload and fatigue". BAE Systems test pilots are currently testing the technology in Typhoon.
Rolls-Royce is working on an Advanced Combustion Technology program. Team Tempest says the next-generation system should be "hotter than previous platforms" and improve the efficiency of the Tempest's engine.

More details have emerged about the UK's next-generation air combat programme, with the recent announcement that a demonstration aircraft will be flying "within the next five years". BAE Systems, which is leading work on the program, also released a new mock-up of a possible Tempest configuration, which shows a manned fighter similar to the US F-22 Raptor stealth fighter, while its underpinnings are reminiscent of the F-22. This week's Farnborough International Air Show outside London gave BAE the chance to reveal its new Tempest concept, a design that draws striking comparisons to previous artwork, videos and even full-scale models. However, there were significant changes to the airframe, with the Lambda wing replacing the clipped delta with a sharp rear. The engine intakes, as well as the overall profile of the front of the fuselage, now all appear to share more with the F-22 than previous iterations, which feature a "Pelkan" nose profile.
The ejection surfaces are still fixed stabilizers as found on the YF-23, rather than separate vertical stabilizers and stabilizers, but they are larger and mounted immediately on the trailing edge of the wing. The engine shafts appear to be wrapped around the rear body, without the "knife" that used to be located between them.
